This website is in honour of Ann, a remarkable woman.
Ann stood for a better world, in which the human dimension, love, personal development for all and respect for all living beings are central.
That her wishes and life may inspire us.
Due to a confluence of sad circumstances, parts of Ann’s life have remained underexposed or unknown, even to loved ones. Even to Ann’s daughters, who had to miss Ann at far too young an age. Ann would so have liked things to be different…
Ann as a person, her life on earth and especially how she dealt with challenges, disappointments and stressful circumstances can serve as inspiration to many. And that inspiration can then help realise Ann’s wishes for a better world: so please help!
For 1 of the possible initiatives, we would like additional Information about Ann, as well as pictures of her. Do you have these and expect that they are not already known? Please respond via our contact page or mail!
About her life in brief
Ann lived mainly in Durban/South Africa (Pinetown, Glenwood, Glenmore, Carrington Heights, Berea).
Moved to Almelo/Holland with her parents in 1975, made a 3-month trip with parents and youngest sister on their pleasure yacht across the river Maas and French canals to Paris (France) and back in summer 1975.
Studied 1975/1976 at Schoevers Arnhem and stayed with host family Stob in Oosterbeek. During this period, Ann also often stayed with friends in Odijk and in the Biesbosch. Returned to Durban in August 1976. Worked among others at Standard Bank Durban and from 1 October 1977 at Van Leeuwen Pipes & Tubes in Isipingo. She witnessed the huge expansion of Van Leeuwen and as an extremely active PA and CEO secretary also enabled it. In autumn 1980, she visited HQ Van Leeuwen Pipes & Tubes in Zwijndrecht/NL.
In August 1982, she married in Durban with a service at her beloved Manning Road Methodist Church and reception at the Maharani. Due to boycott and political situation, Van Leeuwen Pipes & Tubes was forced to stop their SA activities. She then continued to work for “Feed the babies Fund” in Durban, where she was active with PR and fundraising to provide food and shelter for orphaned babies.
In 1985, Ann and husband moved to the Netherlands, where after a holiday apartment in Scheveningen, they moved into an flat on De Brink in The Hague (Loosduinen). Their first daughter was born in June 1986 and their second daughter in January 1988.
In 1989, they moved to St Albans England, where they lived in a house (with garden!) on Tavistock Avenue. Around 1990, Ann started designing and making bridal gowns.
In the summer of 1991, however, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which was no longer treatable and had spread too much. Thereupon, Ann returned to her parents in Durban with her 2 daughters for palliative care. She passed away 11 November, local time 11:11 hours, 1991.
At her funeral was a sea of flowers…..
